History & Origin

“The Lions Club of Kuching Metro” has a long history, which started way back as early as in 1986, during which it has passed through many phases and changes. All these streams of our Lions Club history begins with the Official Chartered Date of our Club on March 4, 1986 with 28 Chartered Members and Lions Club of Kuching Host as our sponsor. This was the high moment of our history; the great desire of our Chartered Members, their one vision and one dream in Lions movement. The Chartered Members have come at last to the true fulfillment of this dream.

For significant periods of the movement’s history it has been the dominant Lions Club in the region. The Lions Club of Kuching Metro has remained relevant because its programme and outlook its Board of Directors and Members have adapted to the changing social and communities services environment, and it has never been exclusively linked to any one issue or group. Continuity is provided by the fact that theLions Club of Kuching Metro has always stood for social and communities services, rendering charitable works and on humanitarian one too.

Origins

The origins of the Lions Club of Kuching Metro as mentioned earlier can be traced to 1986 whereby one Lion from the Lions Club of Kuching Host, that is Lion FrancisFong, who then gathered one group of enthusiastic young and dynamic businessmen and professional to form a New Lions Club.. This process was established and securing hold on this group of young and dynamic businessmen and professional was carried out between late 1985 and early 1986, first under the Chartered President Lion Neilson Ng Ah Seng (1986/1987 & 1987/1988) and then Lion Albert Tang Yew Liong (1988/1989).

Our Guiding Lion then was and still is, Dr. Choo Cheng Ngiap. He was the Lion who guided our Chartered Members to the Chartered Night / Dinner Banquet, which was held on March 24, 1986 at Dewan Asajaya, Holiday Inn, Kuching. PDG Lion Shiv P. Banerjee (DG 1985/1986) was our first Guest of Honour who also installed our First Board of Directors for 1986/1987.

However, few years later after the Chartered President Lion Neilson Ng Ah Seng moved his establishment to his hometown in West Malaysia, the Club still carried on till to date, which is led by the current President Lion Richard Lee Sea Nee.

Since then, it is gradually becoming a pre occupation for our Club and, expectedly, soon has been our Club’s tradition to mark March 4 as a milestone in our Club’s members as Lions. To write our Club’s Credentials and Profile is for the past, the present and the future come together all at once in one single motion, in one single heave, one single roar. For we correct the errors of the past and chart a new course for the future, based on the experience of the present.
